Walter Gropius, Hagerty House, Cohasset, Massachusetts

'Walter Gropius, The Hagerty House,' appears in the December/January 2009 issue of Dwell Magazine. Architect Peter McMahon of Cape Cod Modern House Trust mentioned the house to me during our meeting with Falmouth Historical Commission. The house in Cohasset, Massachusetts, was Gropius' first residential project in the U.S. and was completed in 1938.
On a recent visit to Scituate, Massachusetts, a town just south of Cohasset, I stumbled upon the house and it is quite dramatic in person. Although the story does not go into great detail about the restoration, there is no architect mentioned, the owners bravely did not alter the architecture and kept the home's stark white stucco exterior and granite walls. This story is a wonderful example of a sensitive restoration of an iconic modern house. The interior is renovated in a sympathetic way and is made practical for modern living.
